Sustainable development goals

Supporting the UN Sustainable development goals

Our sustainability strategy has been developed to demonstrate and report against the action we take to advance broader environmental and social goals, such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Below we have outlined how our work supports and aligns with these goals.

No poverty

What we do

We value the rights of the people who are connected to our products or operations at our sites and along the supply chain. We want to make sure that the human rights of everyone involved in the production & supply of our products are respected.

Our sustainability goals

By end 2020 a social accountability system at our sites will be implemented, as well as establishing and maintaining a supplier social accountability system.

Good health & well-being

What we do

At Ontex, we care about people. We aim to improve quality of life across generations and across the world, by facilitating access to basic, high-quality services. We have made it our mission to deliver smart, affordable hygiene solutions for women, for people with personal healthcare needs, and for children.

Moreover, creating a healthy and safe working environment is a key pillar of our sustainability efforts. By providing good and safe working conditions and a positive work/life balance, we recognize the contribution of our employees to our success.

Quality education

What we do

Education is a fundamental human right and is key to reducing poverty, increasing equality and improving life chances. Especially for women and girls, modern absorbent hygiene products contribute to social progress in terms of comfort, convenience and a reduction in household chores. The use of sanitary products helps to reduce absenteeism in the workplace and in the classroom, contributing to a more equal and inclusive society.

For adult care, through our work with The Continence Institute (TCI) we provide training on all aspects of continence assessment, management and treatment to healthcare organizations and staff, other professionals and carers.

And within Ontex we offer our employees attractive learning and development opportunities in their daily work.

Gender equality

What we do

We recognize that each employee brings their own unique capabilities, experiences and characteristics to their work. We believe that a diverse workforce will help us to reach a more diverse marketplace and will create a sustainable profitable business.

Affordable & clean energy

What we do

Today, there is general agreement that our planet's climate is changing and that greenhouse gas emissions from human activities are one of the main causes. At Ontex, we believe that climate change may have long-term direct and indirect human implications for our business. That's why we set the ambitious goal to become carbon neutral by 2030.

Our sustainability goals

  • By 2030 we want to have carbon neutral operations (scope 1-2).
  • By end 2020, all main sites have ISO50001.

We want to ensure that what we do has a positive impact on the planet and people’s lives. And as we continue to expand, sustainable sourcing and use of the material inputs is crucial. • By end 2020 all plants have selected a local community project.

Responsible production & consumption

What we do

Societies need to find fair and equitable ways to meet individual needs and aspirations within the ecological limits of the planet. Our starting point is to reduce the environmental impact of all our activities by continuously improving our production and business processes, and by preventing pollution. A better understanding of environmental and social impacts of products and services is our driver both of product lifecycles and of the way we communicate the sustainability features of our products.

Our Sustainability Goals

  • Have carbon neutral operations by end 2030
  • Have all our fiber comes from certified or controlled sources by end 2017.
  • By end 2018, all cotton used in tampons to come from more organic resources.

What we do

The main societal challenge we face is post-consumer waste, especially in emerging countries where landfill is still the main treatment method for our products.

Our Sustainability Goals

  • By end of 2020 we aim to have zero production waste to landfill.

Climate action

What we do

To achieve the UNFCCC goal of limiting the global rise in temperature we need to continuously improve energy efficiency, reduce the carbon footprint of our products, services and processes, and set ambitious emissions reduction targets. Ontex invests in renewable energy resources, prioritizes energy efficient practices, supports recognized certifications (such as ISO50001) and adopts clean energy technologies and infrastructure.

Our Sustainability Goals

  • Have carbon neutral operations by end 2030
  • Adopt clean energy techologies and infrastructure.

Ontex implements strategies to incentivize responsible forest management and environmental stewardship. All fluff used is certified or controlled.

We apply eco-design principles to our product design, source certified raw materials responsibly and manufacture to various eco-label standards, such as Nordic SWAN and ├ľkotex. To reduce the impact of product disposal, we invest in developing and using lower-impact biodegradable and compostable raw materials.

Our sustainability goals

  • All our fiber comes from certified or controlled sources.
  • By end 2018, all cotton used in tampons to come from more organic resources

Peace, justice and strong institutions

What we do - Business ethics

We are committed to upholding human rights within our own operations and supply chains internationally. We are helping address entrenched social issues within our supply chains such as low wages, freedom of association, and the empowerment of workers.

Our sustainability goals

  • By end 2020 implement a social accountability system at our sites.
  • Establish and maintain a supplier social accountability system by end 2020.

Partnerships for the goals

What we do

By helping our customers to build strong brands and products, we are able to achieve the highest level of success. So we invest in building long-term relationships and share our expertise to develop partnerships with our customers. We also partner with research institutes and universities, work closely with our clients and suppliers to understand their needs, and listen to consumers. Equally, we exchange thoughts and ideas with our suppliers and we launched the Partnership Tracker to build long-term partnerships with our preferred suppliers. We work across business functions to ensure we can provide the market with reliable and sustainable products at an affordable price, and through some key external partnerships we are challenged to continuously improve the business we do.
